Information
School,
University
of Sheffield, UK. I also work part-time as Data Scientist for
Peak Indicators, a Business Intelligence and Analytics company based in Chesterfield, UK.
Previously, I was head of the
Information
Retrieval (IR) Group at Sheffield, Director of Research for the Information School and Coordinator of our
MSc Data Science programme.
I acted as Project Coordinator in 2017-18 for the EU-funded
FashionBrain project to investigate the use of Data Science and Big Data within the fashion industry. I have also been PI for Sheffield on the EUROPEANA DSI-2/3 projects, where we have been investigating search tasks and developing an evaluation framework for
Europeana. Previously I was Scientific Director of an EU-funded project called
PATHS (Personalised Access To cultural Heritage Spaces), running an
AHRC-funded project on recommender systems for WorldCat.org with OCLC Inc. In 2015 I was awarded a Google Faculty Research Award for a project about developing a taxonomy of search sessions. I have been a member of the Steering Committee for the Cross Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF) since 2003.
Teaching interests:
search and analytics; natural language processing; database
design; information systems and data science.
Research interests:
information retrieval, particularly multilingual searching of texts and images; evaluation of retrieval systems; interactive search systems; data analytics; natural language processing, text reuse and plagiarism detection.
